What is Manchester United’s best formation and starting XI?

Manchester United’s 4-0 win against QPR made one thing abundantly obvious which most fans already knew: the 5-3-2 formation is not good for United.

On Sunday, United lined up in a 4-4-2 formation based around the diamond in midfield and reaped the rewards thanks to the flowing football.

However, was it the best starting XI United could have put out?

Here’s the team that played against QPR from the start:

In defence Jonny Evans and Tyler Blackett deserve plaudits after their performances. Seeing both players run out from defence with the ball at certain points was encouraging to see.

At right-back, Rafael reminded United fans how good he can be and how poor Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young are in that position.

As for Marcos Rojo, he played at left-back which is a position he is comfortable in but his natural centre-back spot was taken.

Over time, Luke Shaw will grow into the left-back role but how who will will miss out in defence when Rojo gets a spot?

In midfield Daley Blind, Ander Herrera and Angel di Maria were superb. That’s certainly the strongest trio United have there and Juan Mata completes the diamond.

It’s up front where the main questions are asked. Are Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie the starting strikers? On his performances this season, dropping Van Persie for Radamel Falcao could be the best way United can improve on this current formation.

What do you think is Manchester United’s best starting XI and formation?
