Angel di Maria has promised fans he will do everything possible to not let down the legacy of Manchester United’s No.7 shirt.
Over the course of United’s history no shirt has a greater story than the fabled No.7 that players such as George Best, Bryan Robson, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo have worn.
Like Ronaldo, Di Maria was given the shirt right at the start of his career and United’s latest signing is keen to leave a legacy behind just like Ronaldo did with his career at Old Trafford.
“It is very nice to use this number,” he told Fox Sports Radio Del Plata.
“Many important players have worn this shirt and I am going to do all that is possible to not let down this shirt.”
Di Maria got off to the best possible start at Old Trafford with a goal and a Man of the Match performance in his first home start and he fitted right into the mould of a United No.7 – he took players on with ease and was a thorn in the opponents side.
“I wished very much for the day of my debut at Old Trafford and I did in the best way, scoring a goal,” Di Maria added.
“The happiness is enormous. We have a coach that wants the very best from each player.
“We put a lot of pressure on in the attack, we handled the ball and we got near to our rivals’ goal many times.”
There is plenty of expectation on the shoulders of Di Maria and that naturally happens when you are a club’s most expensive ever signing but if his performance against QPR is anything to go by, then come the end of the season Di Maria will have been worth every penny United spent on him.
