The 19-year-old was a surprise inclusion for United’s Under-21s this week against Sunderland but he tore the North East club apart with a fantastic hat-trick in front of an onlooking Van Gaal in the stands.
Some have questioned what sort of role Januzaj will play this season but he remains focused on impressing Van Gaal and earning his spot back in the team.
“I tried to do my best,” Januzaj told MUTV.
“Obviously, even if it’s Reserves level, I always have to show myself and improve. I got a hat-trick but I think I worked hard defensively as well and these are the kind of things I have to do now and at first-team level.
“Of course, I played a lot of games last season and I’m trying to impress the manager once again and get games again this year as well.”
Januzaj also made it clear he would be happy to play at any level this year in order to give himself the best chance to get back into United’s first-team.
“I think I do it myself,” he added.
“I don’t for it for any other people but for myself. I look after my [performance]. Even if I have to play Under-18s, I have to do it and try to improve every time I play.”
Januzaj’s hat-trick against Sunderland’s Under-21s showed how he is a cut above that level of football but it does remain to be seen how Van Gaal uses him and whether he will have to settle for short cameo appearances from the bench.
