Nani got Sporting Lisbon’s Champions League campaign off to the perfect start with a fine left footed drive from outside of the box tonight against Maribor.
The 27-year-old fired a great strike home to give Sporting Lisbon the lead but the Portuguese side conceded an equaliser and had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Gary Neville’s description of Danny Welbeck rings true with Nani as he showed with his effort tonight in the Champions League.
“He isn’t a great goalscorer but he is a scorer of great goalscorer,” Neville previously said of Welbeck.
The Portuguese winger may only be on loan with his old club Sporting but it would be a big surprise if he rejoined United’s squad after this season long loan back in Portugal.
Nani was a wonderful player prior to his succession of injuries from 2012 onwards but ever since then his career with United stagnated and he was never able to recapture his best form.
A move away from United this summer was almost inevitable and although the last couple of years have been frustrating for him at United, he is young enough to make another career for himself outside the walls of Old Trafford and he is certainly talented enough to do so.
