Angel di Maria has revealed Louis van Gaal was an important figure in his decision to join Manchester United this summer.
The Argentinian left Real Madrid despite them being current European champions in a British record £59.7m deal after a relationship with the club lessened over time.
Di Maria immediately showed flashes of brilliance on his debut away to Burnley but it was his first game at Old Trafford against QPR last weekend where he was unstoppable.
When you are making your football picks, Di Maria is already considered one of the best players in the world but he has insisted he wants to continue improving which is another big reason why he joined United to play for Van Gaal.
“Van Gaal was really important for me in order to come here,” Di Maria told Perform.
“[He] was one of the first [people] who spoke about bringing me here. The coach always has the last word about the players he wants. I am really grateful to him because, thanks [to] him, I am now playing for United.
“I keep trying to improve every day and for that reason I wanted to come here to United. I needed to change my life. I will try my best to play the right way. I will try my best every match and show my arrival at Old Trafford was worthy.”
Di Maria has only been a United player for a very short amount of time but has immediately become a fans’ favourite because he brings a real touch of glamour back to Old Trafford.
Ever since Cristiano Ronaldo left in 2009, United have lacked that star individual who can change the game by flicking a switch. Robin van Persie was superb in his debut season with the club as he was a devastating finisher but players like Di Maria can pick the ball up in their own half and make some magic all on their own.
His arrival was part of a £150m overhaul that included five other signings but Di Maria expects United to settle down quickly and start to reassert themselves as one of the top teams in England.
He added: “Manchester United are trying to grow. We already know we didn’t start the Premier [League] in the right way [but] those things always happen in football.
“Marcos Rojo [has] shown at the World Cup [that] he is capable. He did really well there and he deserved to come here. Hopefully he will be able to improve every day as he did at the World Cup and he will bring a lot of good things to United.”
