Louis van Gaal has promised to get Radamel Falcao, Angel di Maria and Marcos speaking English by the end of the year.
The Manchester United boss admits he does currently use some Spanish on the training pitch but has reiterated not for the first time that he wants his players to use English.
“You know already that all the Spanish players have lessons in English so we have started already more than two weeks,” he said.
“We are only two weeks in this country because we were on the USA and after that we have also international week. But I can speak Spanish so it is better to communicate sometimes on the pitch in Spanish.
“But they shall learn English within one year, I promise.”
Back in July when United were on their pre-season US Tour, Juan Mata admitted Van Gaal had already laid down some ground rules about what language to speak: “We (the squad) only speak in English. He (Van Gaal) says we have to speak in English.”
Van Gaal’s methods all help to build up the players’ understanding of each other as with more than one language being spoken in the dressing room, there’s a higher risk of errors happening which is a risk the Dutchman isn’t willing to take.
Falcao already tried his hand, very successfully, during his first press conference as a United player, something Van Gaal asked reporters in the room to present for and by the sounds of it, it won’t be long before all of United’s players are singing from the same language sheet, literally.
