Manchester United academy products Tom Thorpe and Paddy McNair will be part of Manchester United’s match day squad to face West Ham tomorrow.
Louis van Gaal confirmed the news to MUTV that the young duo have been drafted in as a consequence of United’s current injury crisis in defence.
“They are in the squad,” Van Gaal said.
“That is always why we have a youth education. It was also our policy [to utilise the youth squads] and always the policy of the club too.”
For fans of the Under-21s who have followed Thorpe’s progress for years, his place in the first-team squad is more than justified and as for McNair, it’s great news for him to be involved given that he is only 19-years-old.
Thorpe, 21, is the stand-out candidate to start alongside Marcos Rojo and given how consistent his performances in defence have been as captain of the Under-21s side, there is high hopes he’ll be able to cope with the big step up to Premier League football and replicate that sort of form.
