Patrick McNair shines on Man United debut under immense pressure

by Sam Peoples

There were plenty of positives to take from Manchester United’s 2-1 win over West Ham but the debut of Paddy McNair deserves a special mention.

The 19-year-old was thrown into the deep end in every way possible today. After the 5-3 loss to Leicester City last week, United were under severe pressure to put in a performance and then Wayne Rooney‘s red card meant United were on the wrong end of immense, constant attack for 30 minutes.

Yet, despite the pressure boiler situation, McNair took everything in his stride. He may have been nervy when in possession of the ball but McNair deserves all the praise he gets after his debut.

As well as an assured all-round performance, McNair’s headed clearance late on stands out as the moment of the match for how important it was.

Louis van Gaal was equally as impressed by McNair’s debut but insisted he wasn’t overly surprised because of how much he had been impressed by McNair in training: “He played very well. I could have imagined a performance like this before the match because he’s a very good player.

“Mostly, players like this have good debuts. I’m very pleased for him that we won, because he played very well and his goal-saving header in the second half was fantastic. He was also very good with the ball at his feet.”

McNair will be over the moon after his performance and bouncing off the walls at home and rightly so, well done to him.
