Tom Thorpe caps off fantastic week with winning goal for Man United Under-21s

Tom Thorpe capped off a week to remember last night with a last minute winner for Manchester United’s Under-21s to give them a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Thorpe rose highest to meet an Adnan Januzaj corner and rifled home his header with a real captain’s goal when the team needed it.

After making his senior United debut with a late cameo against West Ham last weekend, Thorpe couldn’t have asked for a better finish than a dramatic winner for the Under-21s.

Now Thorpe has had his first taster of senior football at United, there’s only one thing on his mind and although Patrick McNair got his full debut before Thorpe despite being two years his junior, he had nothing but kind words to say about his impressive performance.

“We’re delighted with the win and the way it has come it is great,” Thorpe told MUTV after the full-time whistle.

“There’s no complaints on how McNair played and he did great. I was delighted to get on and hopefully there is more to come.

“You can see there are a few lads making their debut this season and they have been doing well which is great.

“As soon as you get a little bit of first-team action you want more, so hopefully I can get it.”

You’d be hard struck to find a United fan who has a bad word to say about Thorpe. A startlingly consistent player who leads by example, Thorpe is the consummate professional and a great leader of men, characteristics that put him in great stead to make a name for himself at United.

Thorpe may not have got his full debut last weekend but the general consensus around Old Trafford is that it is a case of when, not if, Thorpe will be given his chance to shine and rightly so.

If Thorpe can fulfil on the promise he has shown for years with United’s Under-21s and is given the opportunities to prove himself, he’ll become a big success with United’s first-team.
