Ander Herrera misses out on first ever Spain call-up due to injury

by Sam Peoples

Ander Herrera has missed out on what would have been his first call-up to the Spain squad after suffering a fractured rib, according to Inside Spanish Football.

The 25-year-old has never been able to break into Spain’s national set-up as the likes of Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Cesc Fabregas and a host of other midfielders were ahead of him in the pecking order.

However, his recent form forced Vicente Del Bosque to take notice of him and Herrera was in line to receive a much deserved call-up.

Herrera was part of Spain’s Under-21s squad alongside David de Gea and Juan Mata that won the European Championships back in 2011 but has never been part of Spain’s senior squad.

When you consider that midfielders such as Real Madrid’s Isco missed out on a spot at the World Cup due to the competition inside the squad, you realise how tough it is for any midfielder to be considered for national duty with Spain.

It’s such a shame for Herrera to have missed out on an opportunity he would have been waiting a long time for but what it does show is just how much impact the midfielder has joining United in the summer and it now looks like a case of when, not if, he’ll make his full Spain debut.
