Wesley Sneijder has said he was flattered by interest from Manchester United this summer but didn’t consider moving because he wanted to continue playing Champions League football.
Sneijder was part of Louis van Gaal‘s World Cup squad and like so many other Dutch players, he was linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Speaking ahead of Galatasaray’s game against Arsenal, Sneijder hailed Louis van Gaal but insisted he is happy with Galatasaray.
“Louis (Van Gaal) is one of the most intelligent men in football – and I knew of Manchester United’s interest in the summer,” he said.
“It was flattering – but I am very happy in Turkey – and it is very hard to leave Champions League football.”
Given that Galatasaray were on the wrong end of a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Arsenal, Sneijder might be re-considering his options.
However, if he did indeed snub interest from United in order to play Champions League football, he was certainly in the minority.
Radamel Falcao, Angel di Maria, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw all made the move regardless of United’s involvement in Europe this year because they know the ambition of the club is to get straight back into Europe’s premier competition.
