Louis van Gaal has told reporters that Patrick McNair will start for Manchester United on Sunday against Everton.
The 19-year-old was extremely impressive on his debut against West Ham last weekend and will now face a much tougher challenge up against a strong Everton side including Romelu Lukaku.
Speaking to the press this afternoon, Van Gaal made it clear he didn’t want to use two left footed centre backs and challenged McNair to maintain his high level of performance
“We still have three central defenders injured so he [McNair] shall play,” he said.
“He is the only player who can play in the right-sided defensive position. I chose him last week and he was very good. It’s difficult for a player like him to maintain that level – that is his biggest challenge.”
McNair got his opportunity last week and earned his stripes with a great debut against West Ham but now is when the hard work really begins as he has to find the consistency which alludes so many players in the Premier League.
