U18s: Manchester United 2-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

by Tracey Germaine

Manchester United’s Under-18s broke their two-match losing streak with a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Altrincham’s Moss Lane.

Without Demetri Mitchell through injury, the Reds had to look elsewhere for goals which tonight came from Marcus Rashford and Ruairi Croskery in the second half.

It was a different experience for the youngsters under the floodlights at Moss Lane as they are more familiar with early Saturday morning fixtures.

Wolves started brightest creating several chances in the opening stages but Dean Henderson was equal to their attempts. After then, United grew into the game and began to dominate possession. There were two really good chances, both of which involved Joe Riley. Riley did well down the right for the first and put a good ball in across the face of goal. Unfortunately Cameron Borthwick-Jackson couldn’t direct his header on target. Later, Riley played a one-two with Callum Gribbin. His effort deflected off a Wolves defender and Croskery did really well, following in, winning possession and somehow managing to get a shot in from a really acute angle. However, he was denied by the post and the half finished goalless.

Once again, Wolves started the second half the brighter of the sides and once again United grew into the game. Devonte Redmond fired a shot in from distance and forced the Wolves’ keeper into a save. Rashford then saw a shot curl over the bar. Riley continued his hard work on the right flank and unsurprisingly grabbed himself an assist. He picked out Rashford in the box and the forward slotted home. Unfortunately Rashford had to make way not long afterwards having picked up an injury, as did Gribbin.

Croskery sealed the victory late on in the game. Ro-Shaun Williams, who along with Axel Tuanzebe had a solid game in central defence, picked out substitute Zak Dearnley with a lovely pass. Dearnley then played the ball to Croskery in the penalty area and the Northern Irishman tapped in with a neat finish.

Following the win, United sit in 8th place in the Barclays’ Under-18s Premier League Northern Group with 10 points from 7 games. However, it should be noted that many of the other teams in the division will play after this result.
