Manchester United’s potential best XI – 4-3-3: Carrick in but Rooney, Mata and Van Persie out

Despite featuring no Wayne Rooney or Robin van Persie in the starting XI, our take on a 4-3-3 formation was met by lots of fans who felt it was the right way to go.

With that in mind, we’ve gone for another variation on that formation which would make quite a dramatic difference in how the team would shape up for a game.

The major change sees Michael Carrick brought in as the pivot midfielder in front of the back four. Louis van Gaal has bemoaned United’s ability to maintain possession when ahead in games and Carrick’s inclusion would almost certainly improve ball retention which would, in turn, give United more control over a match.

Due to Carrick, Daley Blind is pushed further up into a central midfield position and Juan Mata is the player who has to settle for a place on the bench alongside Rooney and Van Persie.

This line-up looks extremely balanced with Carrick bridging the defence to midfield, Blind and Herrera’s energy helping United control the middle while a three pronged attack relies on pace, spearheaded by Angel di Maria.

Could United’s best formation really come when Van Persie, Rooney and Mata are on the bench?
