Although yesterday’s 4-3-3 was met with plenty of support, there were those who voiced their concerns about how defensive Manchester United would look if Michael Carrick sat behind a midfield pair of Ander Herrera and Daley Blind.
One particular suggestion from United Rantcast’s Paul Ansorge remedied that situation and we’ve implemented it into this next formation – playing Juan Mata as an attacking midfielder in front of Herrera and Blind who would both become deeper lying central midfielders.
Instead of the focus being on Carrick to marshal the back four, Blind and Herrera would operate in that role together, with the Spaniard encouraged to push forward alongside Mata when necessary.
This variation of the 4-3-3 also sees Wayne Rooney return to the starting XI after criticism which suggested it would be foolish to leave him out of any United XI.
However, putting Rooney into this formation raises another question – is Rooney able to play out wide in a 4-3-3 formation any more?
