Angel Di Maria’s early form for Manchester United has upset many managers and defenders over the past few weeks but it’s also caught the attention of his former boss Jorge Jesus, Benfica manager, who has claimed he wishes Di Maria had never left the club in the first place.
The former Real Madrid winger joined United this summer for a club record fee of almost £60m just four years after initially leaving Benfica for around £20m, and it appears Jesus has regrets that Di Maria left the club, even if it was for one of the biggest clubs in the world.
Speaking to Portuguese newspaper Record, Jesus said: “One player I wish had never left Benfica? Di Maria because of his technique and speed.
“He’s spectacular to watch in training day to day.”
Di Maria had only been at Benfica three years when Madrid came calling and the Argentinian winger certainly showed his world class talent on a weekly basis at the Bernabeu, culminating in a man of the match performance as his Real Madrid side beat rivals Atletico in the Champions League final this year.
Di Maria was influential throughout and such performances prompted Ed Woodward to spend a club record fee on the man who has now become a vital part of the club’s new midfield diamond.
