Manchester United arranging behind closed doors friendly for Michael Carrick return – report

Michael Carrick is set to make his playing return for Manchester United in a behind closed doors friendly this week, report the Daily Mail.

The 33-year-old hasn’t played under Louis van Gaal as he underwent surgery on an ankle ligament problem before the start of the season but is now closing in on his return to competitive football.

It is not uncommon for United players returning from injury to take part in a friendly like this to help them on their road to recovery as it is the perfect way to ease them back into a match situation.

Phil Jones is also reportedly stepping up his recovery from a hamstring injury and could take part in the friendly as well which would be a great boost to United’s squad given the current lack of depth in terms of defensive options.

Ander Herrera and Daley Blind have been fantastic in midfield so far this season but United have desperately missed Carrick’s ability to simply retain possession and keep United in control of the ball.

There is a possibility Carrick could make an appearance on the bench against West Brom and it would be a fantastic option for Van Gaal to have Carrick available for selection.
