Rojo: Di Maria and I don’t understand Rooney’s jokes!

by Richard Laverty

Manchester United duo Marcos Rojo and Angel Di Maria might get along great with Wayne Rooney but they can’t understand him just yet.

Rojo, 24, finally completed his move to United after the season had started due to work permit issues alongside fellow Argentine Di Maria and both have setted down very well at their new club.

However, it appears neither have yet grasped their captain’s strong scouse accent.

“Rooney is a professional guy but he is so funny when he speaks,” Rojo told The Sun.

“In fact, he jokes at me and Angel but I have to admit we don’t understand his jokes – because we don’t speak English.

“Soon I will understand because I want to learn the language and I am already taking lessons.”

Earlier in the season Rooney, made club captain by new manager Louis van Gaal in the summer, also discussed the fact the majority of United’s dressing room now speak Spanish in an interview with Sky Sports.

Alongside Rojo and Di Maria, Spanish speaking Radamel Falcao also joined the club in August after Ander Herrera arrived at the start of pre-season. With David De Gea and Juan Mata already at the club, Rooney admits English is becoming a second language inside the United changing room.

“You get in the dressing room and everyone’s speaking Spanish! English is getting pushed aside a bit,” said the United captain.

“All the senior players are helping the new lads settle in too and there’s a lot of foreign players so they can help each other too.

‘The manager makes sure the players are speaking English as well and the club make sure things are put in place for them to adapt to life in England.”

To be fair to Rojo and Di Maria, most people struggle to understand a scouser.
