Wayne Rooney has become the highest scoring England player ever in competitive football as after his free-kick against Estonia last night, his tally now sits at 30 goals.
Overall, Rooney is now just seven goals away (43) from becoming England’s highest scoring player ever in all competitions as Sir Bobby Charlton is currently the highest with 49.
However, the statistics don’t particularly paint the true picture as although Rooney may be the all-time record goalscorer for England competitively, he only scored his first goal at the World Cup this summer against Uruguay.
Prior to that, he had never scored for England on the biggest stage which is quite staggering when you think Rooney is considered one of the best strikers in the world.
It’s strange to think that a player who is on the precipice of becoming Manchester United and England’s highest ever goalscorer divides fans so much but that’s exactly what Rooney does.
United fans have every right to be split on Rooney after his antics since following his contract sagas and for England fans, they simply don’t feel Rooney does fulfils his potential.
