Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia return to Manchester United training after injury

by Sam Peoples

Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera have returned to training with Manchester United to give Louis van Gaal more midfield options ahead of Chelsea this weekend.

Herrera was substituted at half-time against West Brom on Monday and Valencia injured his hamstring in United’s 2-1 win over Everton before the international break, but they are now in contention to play against Chelsea.

Valencia was used as a makeshift central midfielder against Everton as Ander Herrera was ruled out of the game through injury and to the surprise of many, it was probably his best performance this season.

Unspectacular and workmanlike, Valencia gave an added physical presence in midfield which helped United on the day and although he offered very little going forward, he was decent in an unorthodox role for him at United.

As for Herrera, he was rushed back for the game against West Brom and there was a fear it could have ruled him out of contention for Chelsea but he took part in full training today, so there is certainly a possibility he will be fit.

At the moment it isn’t known whether Herrera, Carrick or Valencia will be fit enough to start against Chelsea this weekend but it is good news for United that players are returning from injury.
