Manchester United adopted a traditional 4-3-3 formation for the first time this season in Monday night’s 2-2 draw with West Brom.
Using Angel di Maria and Adnan Januzaj as more natural wingers hugging the touchline, it saw Robin van Persie play up front on his own with Juan Mata behind him just in front of Ander Herrera and Daley Blind.
However, Van Persie was poor once again. Consistently, his performances have been below par in recent games and going into Chelsea, there’s no way Louis van Gaal can choose him on form.
For that reason, we’ve taken a look at what a 4-3-3 formation could look like with Van Persie on the bench and Radamel Falcao starting up front in his place.
One thing is for sure – there’d be a lot more movement without Van Persie in the side. His slower style of play doesn’t completely compliment Di Maria on the wing whereas Falcao’s off the ball work could see United creating a lot more chances.
