Angel di Maria shortlisted for 2014 Ballon d’Or award

by Sam Peoples

Angel di Maria has been placed on the shortlist of candidates nominated for the 2014 Ballon d’Or trophy.

It’s fantastic to see Di Maria placed on the list on the back of a campaign where he fought his way back into Real Madrid’s starting XI, put in a Man of the Match performance in the Champions League final and finished the league campaign with the most assists.

Awarded to the best player in the world football from the previous year, the Ballon d’Or is the most prestigious individual trophy available in football.

Over the past few years, the award has been dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo (current holder) and although that is unlikely to change this year, it’s still a testament to how quality Di Maria is.

Here is the list of nominations in full: Bale, Benzema, Costa, Courtois, Ronaldo, Di Maria, Gotze, Hazard, Ibrahimovic, Iniesta, Kroos, Lahm, Mascherano, Messi, Muller, Neuer, Neymar, Pogba, Ramos, Robben, Rodriguez, Schweinsteiger, Toure
