Adnan Januzaj didn’t think twice about saying yes when offered Ryan Giggs’ No.11 shirt by Manchester United this year and admits Giggs has been ‘like a godfather’ by helping the youngster so much already in his career.
The 19-year-old taking on a number that hadn’t been vacant for the best part of three decades was a huge responsibility and his performance against Chelsea showed precisely why he was entrusted with it.
He has the world at his feet with the potential to become a genuine superstar and his mindset has changed after becoming United’s new No.11.
“I was really happy to get the number of such a legend and it was a really big deal for me,” Januzaj told ManUtd.com.
“I went to the office and they asked me if I wanted the shirt. I wasn’t going to say no! Straight away I said ‘of course’ and I didn’t have to think about it. It was a ‘yes’ straight away.
“It feels different. Things have changed because it is a big responsibility to wear the No.11 shirt and having the number of a legend is really big.
“Ryan has helped me a lot and is like a godfather. He has told me to work hard on the training pitch and the rest is more personal. We talk about football a lot.
“I learned a lot from him and the experience was great. He was such a good player to watch and is my favourite player of all time at United. Could I imagine playing at 40? Of course, if I am still fit. You never lose your quality, that’s something I learned from him.”
Januzaj has had to remain patient so far this season but was given his first big opportunity against Chelsea at the weekend and was superb up against Branislav Ivanovic.
As Giggs told Januzaj it is all about working hard on the training pitch and so long as he keeps doing that, he’ll be given more chances. Based on his performance against Chelsea, there’s a strong argument for him starting against Manchester City this weekend.
