Louis van Gaal: City will never be as big as Manchester United

Louis van Gaal has stoked the fire ahead of this weekend’s derby by insisting City will never be as big as United.

The Dutchman will take charge of his first derby as United coach away at the Etihad tomorrow and there is a real sense of anticipation to see whether he can stop City’s recent domination in the derby games.

Despite their record in the past few years, Van Gaal dismissed the possibility City will be able to usurp United and become a bigger club.

“I think it is so that the perception abroad is that Manchester United will always be bigger than City,” he said.

“Abroad we have more fans and followers on social media. It’s like Bayern Munich is the biggest club in Germany.

“It’s the same thing in Spain for Barcelona and Real Madrid. It will take a long time for Manchester City to reach that level.”

Given the fact Ryan Giggs has more medals than City do in their entire history, Van Gaal’s right.

City fans won’t admit it but they’ve got a long way to go if they want to be considered the biggest club in Manchester.
