Paddy McNair was due to play in Manchester United’s U21s game against Leicester City but was not part of the squad despite being fully fit, which indicates he will be back in United’s senior team to face Crystal Palace on Saturday.
The 19-year-old was extremely impressive in his first two appearances for United against West Ham and Everton but a hamstring injury meant he has missed United’s recent games against West Brom and Chelsea. and only came on a substitute against Manchester City.
However, McNair is likely to come back into United’s starting XI for this weekend’s game against Crystal Palace and it will be a timely return given the current defensive plight at Old Trafford.
Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo join Phil Jones and Jonny Evans on the unavailable list for United. It means that Tyler Blackett is currently the most senior available defender in United’s squad with just six first-team appearances.
McNair will come into the game in high spirits after being called up to the Northern Ireland squad for the first time and if he put in the same level of performance as he did against Everton, it will be a much needed improvement for United.
The defensive woes caused by a continuous swathe of injuries has forced United into their worst injury crisis in a long time with no real guarantees it will improve much before January at the very latest.
