Arsenal want to sign Chris Smalling – report

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United’s Chris Smalling is wanted by Arsene Wenger in January to help with his defensive options, The Mirror reports.

The 24-year-old was on Arsenal’s radar in the summer and Thomas Vermaelen’s broken down move to Old Trafford was believed to have been linked with United’s refusal to sell Smalling or Jones to Arsenal.

United failed to sign defensive reinforcements themselves during the summer which has left the club in dire straits defensively to the point where clean sheets are almost a forgotten commodity. Despite that, Smalling is being linked a move away.

Danny Welbeck going to Arsenal left a bitter taste in the mouth for United fans but that sentiment wouldn’t be shared if Smalling made the trip down South.

After his ridiculous red card against Manchester City off the back of two yellow cards, Smalling faces an uphill struggle to win back the United fans because it was such an avoidable red if Smalling had simply been thinking straight.

Of course, it wasn’t simply that red card which has frustrated United fans about Smalling because his injury proneness and inconsistency means he is far from the polished defender now, despite being with the club for four years already.

It would be an amazing risk from Arsenal to sign an injury prone centre-back to solve their injury crises but Smalling, Evans and Jones’ futures at United are all under threat in the next couple of transfer windows and there is every chance one or more could leave the club, even to Arsenal.
