Michael Carrick is to undergo a scan on a groin injury he has suffered away on international duty with England, Sky Sports reports.
Carrick has only recently played his first game of the season having missed the first few months following ankle surgery before the season started, but could face yet more time on the sidelines if the results of the scan reveal an injury.
The 33-year-old made his first competitive start under Louis van Gaal against Crystal Palace last weekend and fans had been eagerly anticipating his return to the squad.
Van Gaal bemoaned United’s ability to hold onto a lead this season and Carrick’s return was seen as a real bonus in that respect given his ability to slow a game down.
There won’t be any confirmation of an injury until Carrick has had his scan which should be in the next 48 hours.
