Robin van Persie’s stunning headed goal for Holland against Spain at the World Cup has been nominated for the FIFA Puskas Goal of the Year Award.
Springing onto the end of a wonderful cross field pass from Manchester United team-mate Daley Blind, Van Persie’s iconic header sparked a turnaround that saw Holland go on to beat the then current European and World champions Spain with a remarkable 5-1 scoreline.
Van Persie’s goal resonated with fans both in and outside of Brazil. The Dutchman had his goal immortalised with graffiti artwork in the Brazilian favelas and it also kick-started a worldwide trend called #Persieing, whereby fans recreated his leap.
The goal has already been named the Dutch Television Moment of the Year and it’s a richly deserved nomination for Van Persie but he faces tough competition for the prize with the likes of James Rodriguez’s volley for Colombia against Uruguay.
