Angel di Maria’s talks with Cristiano Ronaldo helped convince him a move to Manchester United was the right decision.
The Argentinian winger was heavily linked with a move to Paris St Germain but financial restrictions ruled the French side out of a move for him and United paid a club record £59.7m to bring him to Old Trafford.
Di Maria enjoyed a blistering start to life at United with goals and assists aplenty in his first five appearances and although he has somewhat slowed down in the last few games, he still remains one of United’s most dangerous players.
“Before we knew I was coming to Manchester for sure, he [Ronaldo] told me it was a massive club and that I would be very happy here and it would be good for me,” Di Maria told Inside United.
“At that time, we didn’t know for sure that I was coming or not, so we didn’t go into great detail, but what he did say helped me greatly to make my decision.
“It was a very big moment in my career,” Di Maria added.
“Leaving a club like Real and coming to as big a club as Manchester United makes you grow as a player and helps you progress in your career. It was a very important moment and I’m really happy here. Let’s hope things go well for me so I can be here for many years.”
Ronaldo had an innate inability to get people shifting towards the edge of their seat whenever he had the ball and Di Maria has been one of the most exciting players since Ronaldo left back in 2009.
Ronaldo and Di Maria will face off tomorrow night at Old Trafford when Portugal take on Argentina in an international friendly.
