Daley Blind‘s injury away on international duty was the worst possible news for Manchester United. After so many injuries, losing one of the only players who was consistently in the starting XI was a hammer blow.
There is no confirmation about how long Blind will be ruled out for but it’s safe to assume he won’t feature against Arsenal this weekend, unless reports of his medial ligament tear are all wide of the mark.
With that in mind, could Darren Fletcher be re-called back into the side with Michael Carrick‘s fitness also in doubt?
Having had a very good pre-season, Fletcher was named vice-captain behind Wayne Rooney and was in United’s side in the first game of the season.
However, following Blind’s arrival, Fletcher has been relegated to the bench as the Dutchman was imperious in the defensive midfield role. Unlike Fletcher, Blind had the energy to get about the pitch for 90 minutes and it made him so effective in that position, but Blind is now injured.
It’d be a tough game for Fletcher up against the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck running at him but Van Gaal wouldn’t have named him vice-captain for purely sentimental reasons, so there’s every chance the Scot will come back in as the midfield anchor once again, if only on a temporary basis.
