Manchester United’s current injury plight is as bad, if not worse, as it was back in 2011/12.
Terrible luck in the international break compounded the problems and going into the Arsenal game on Saturday there are 12 players who are either injured or concerns remain about their fitness.
Reports suggest Radamel Falcao, Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Michael Carrick will all be fit to play Arsenal in two days time. Jones and Evans have been missing for some time so it would be a timely return ahead of the busy festive schedule. Carrick is also believed to be OK despite having pulled out of international duty with an injury.
As for Falcao, the signs look good for the Colombian. He has been working on his fitness during this two week international break and, depending on how well that went, could even start against Arsenal if he is ready.
There are also positive signs about David de Gea. After he dislocated his little finger away on international duty, the worst was feared. Given how important he has been this season, the last thing Louis van Gaal would have wanted was an injured De Gea. However, if reports are correct, De Gea will start against Arsenal.
Angel di Maria had to go for an X-ray yesterday on a foot injury given to him by Nani. He suffered a swollen foot and a cut thanks to the tackle. Nobody knows the extent or severity of the injury, so hopefully Louis van Gaal will confirm he is OK in today’s press conference.
United’s two full-backs Rafael and Luke Shaw are also not fully match fit. Shaw went into the international break with a minor groin problem and was substituted against Scotland, so there is a concern about his fitness. Shaw himself hopes to be fit but there is no guarantee at this stage.
With Rafael, his fitness is very up and down so you can never really tell what to expect. That being said, the two week break should have been long enough for him to recover.
Van Gaal’s press conference is this afternoon at 4pm GMT and we’ll bring you the latest injury updates as soon as they happen.
