Manchester United have been offered Shakhtar Donetsk and Croatia captain Darijo Srna, according to the Daily Mail.
Louis van Gaal could be looking to strengthen at right-back in January and has reportedly been offered both Srna and Barcelona’s Dani Alves as possible short term options due to Rafael’s struggle with fitness.
Despite being 32 and having 120 caps for Croatia, Srna was named as the fastest player at the World Cup ahead of Arjen Robben and has become an idol for Shakhtar fans having played for 11 years in Ukraine.
Earlier this year, Srna turned down offers to join both Chelsea and Bayern Munich and cited his family wanting to stay as a big reason why he rejected the opportunities, so there would have to be a change of heart for him to leave now.
From United’s perspective, Srna would be a very strong signing. In the short-term, it would add some much needed experience into a defence and offer United a genuine alternative to Rafael because currently when the Brazilian is injured, Van Gaal has to turn to Antonio Valencia who is not a good right-back.
Alves is reportedly another possibility and although he would add the experience in as well, he wouldn’t provide the same balance as Srna because of his tendency to attack at will.
Right-back is certainly a problem position for United. When he is fit and on form, Rafael is a great right-back but his fitness isn’t reliable enough so Van Gaal will certainly be looking at other options.
