David De Gea 9 Was caught slightly unaware at the end but kept United in it up to that point with a string of saves, another accomplished yet unsurprising performance from the side’s no.1.
Patrick McNair 7 Looked relatively assured as usual but his lack of raw pace caught him out once or twice. Four wins from four starts speaks for itself though.
Chris Smalling 8 The confident and strong defender returned today after the Man City fiasco and performed admirably. He got in the way of everything Arsenal threw at him and made one excellent tackle when Welbeck was in on goal.
Tyler Blackett 6 Started quite well but at times looked like he was caught in the headlights. Casual on the ball but not the worst performance given it was his first start since Leicester.
Antonio Valencia 6 Didn’t do a whole lot that was noticeable but popped up to smack one in via Kieran Gibbs’ shin. His passing was tidy but again an unwillingness to take his man on was frustrating.
Marouane Fellaini 8 The much-maligned Belgian really is becoming a pillar of Louis van Gaal‘s first eleven. He was strong in the air, tidy with his passing and won the ball back from the opposition on several occasions, played a big part in the second goal.
Michael Carrick 7 As per usual was the calming influence in United’s midfield. Didn’t get hold of the game but it was Carrick’s usually reliable performance and his return is important for the side.
Angel Di Maria 7 Not up to the usual standards we’ve been spoilt by but Di Maria was again much more involved through the middle. A few runs in the first half showed his quality and he put Rooney through for the second but missed a great chance of his own.
Wayne Rooney 8 A captain’s performance. Ran his heart out, scored a well taken goal and was once again the bundle of energy United lack without him. His passionate celebrations are always worth a watch too.
Robin van Persie 5 Sadly it was another inept and disappointing performance from van Persie on his return to the Emirates. He struggled to get involved or hold the ball up and was subbed for James Wilson.
Ashley Young 7 The man who was so good in pre-season returned in a position he had flourished in and took his chance well. He was dangerous down the left and his cross led to the opening goal, the hot and cold winger has had worse days.
James Wilson 6 Wilson brought pace that van Persie lacked. Was able to run in behind defenders and aid United’s counters, another appearance for the young striker.
Darren Fletcher N/A Brought on with minutes to go and had little chance to do anything more than shore up the defence at 2-1.
