Experienced Croatia national team captain Darijo Srna has been linked with a January move to Manchester United.
Reports state that Srna had been offered to United by his club Shakhtar Donetsk but his agent seems to have poured cold water on the rumours before they’ve even begun.
Damir Stimac, Srna’s agent, was quoted in SportSport as saying Srna was loyal to his club and ‘didn’t show enough interest’ in a move away during the summer.
“This Manchester United story is only one of many. During the summer we had specific questions, however Srna didn’t show enough interest to change club, not even to go on loan.
“He said that his loyalty to Shakhtar is more important than flashy names of possible new employers. And right now, when things are hardest, he must remain.”
It would be no surprise if the club were looking for some defensive cover given the lack of options in the full-back positions and the injuries picked up by first choice right-back Rafael and left-back Luke Shaw.
In recent weeks, both Ed Woodward and Louis van Gaal have dismissed the possibility of buying in January or for the short-term but given the unexpected signing of Juan Mata during the last January window, the chance of a signing shouldn’t be dismissed.
However, the quotes from Stimac would suggest it won’t be the 32-year old that is United’s next recruit during van Gaal’s rebuilding period.
