David de Gea has missed out on a nomination for the 2014 FIFPro World XI short-list as voted for by his fellow professionals.
Manuel Neuer, Gianluigi Buffon, Iker Casillas, Thibaut Courtois and Claudio Bravo were the five goalkeepers who earned a place on the list.
The Spaniard was named Manchester United’s Fans’ and Player of the Year after what was his best season at the club but it wasn’t enough for him to be voted onto the short-list for last year’s best goalkeeper in the world.
For United fans, it’s disappointing that De Gea missed out on the list because of how impressive he was last season.
Casillas was in poor form for Madrid and spent most of the season on the bench yet he was named on the list. He would more than likely not have been included at all if they didn’t win the Champions League but you can understand his fellow professionals nominating him for that. Claudio Bravo was also named on the list just on his World Cup performances for Chile.
He might not be recognised by his fellow professionals on last year’s FIFPro World XI short-list but De Gea had a wonderful 2013/14 season and is only getting better with each game he plays. Next year, he’ll be one of the first names on the team-sheet.
