James Wilson’s composed cameo against Arsenal bodes well for him

Any Manchester United youngster would be forgiven for feeling nervous before coming on against Arsenal at the Emirates with the game on a knife edge.

Yet, instead of being overawed by the occasion, James Wilson was nonchalant and composed on the sideline as he waited to replace Robin van Persie, casually chewing gum with Fergie-like rhythm and an unwavering stare. He looked like he had ice in his veins.

Wilson stretched Arsenal’s defence out for the 20 minutes he was on the pitch and it was a smart performance from him, doing exactly what was asked of him to help see the game out.

Wherever you see or hear Wilson on and off the pitch, he carries the persona of a player who has been there, done that and collected the t-shirt, rather than a 18-year-old waiting for his breakthrough.

When Nick Powell arrived at United, Rio Ferdinand complimented him by saying he walked around Carrington with his head held high and shoulders wide, like he belonged there. That analogy is spot on for Wilson too and it’s going to be exciting watching his rise into the first-team in the fullness of time.
