Manchester United midfielder Angel di Maria has more assists than any footballer in the world throughout 2014.
Di Maria, who joined United in the summer for a club record fee, immediately lifted supporters and players alike with a string of eye-watering performances but his form has dipped slightly since being forced to play out wide as opposed to through the middle.
It came as a surprise to many, seemingly including his Real Madrid team mates when it came to light the Argentinian would be sold by the Champions League winners in the summer, especially given Di Maria’s contribution to their campaign and his performance in the final against rivals Atletico.
Di Maria has also played a hand in important goals in the majority of his appearances for the club so far, even managing to chip in with assists whilst being relatively isolated out on the wing. The 26-year old looked much more comfortable and influential when placed in the no.10 role against Arsenal on Saturday and United fans will hope their star man is returning to form.
His form on the wing has been puzzling given his performances their for Real Madrid and Benfica in the past but it is a testament to the Argentine’s quality and raw talent that he is still influencing his team’s performance with the accuracy of his crosses into the box, something United have lacked in recent seasons.
With a big run of games coming up over Christmas, including matches against Southampton and Liverpool, supporters will be hoping Di Maria is beginning to come back into top form at the right time.
