Jonny Evans successfully returns from injury for Man Utd

Jonny Evans marked his comeback from injury by helping Manchester United’s U21s to a convincing 5-0 win over Blackburn Rovers in the Lancashire Senior Cup.

Alongside Tom Thorpe in the heart of defence, it was the first time Evans had played for United since injuring his foot against Leicester City.

The Northern Irishman was withdrawn after 64 minutes, which could be an indication Louis van Gaal wants to make sure he is fit to face Hull City this weekend.

United’s defensive woes have been crippling so far this season and have forced Van Gaal to use no less than 12 different defensive line-ups, so it would be great news to have Evans back in contention.

Evans is United’s most senior defender following the departure of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, and there has been a distinct lack of leadership at the back which is something Evans would bring back to the team.

Van Gaal has a penchant for playing both a left and right footed defender in defence to create balance which makes Evans’ return an even more important one as he is so comfortable on his left foot.

United have been all about attacking so far this season but with Evans back in the side on a full time basis, United would be far more balanced overall. However, that all depends on whether he is able to maintain his fitness which has always been the case with Evans.
