Franz Beckenbauer says Xherdan Shaqiri can leave Bayern Munich

by Sam Peoples

Bayern Munich’s honorary president Franz Beckenbauer has confirmed Xherdan Shaqiri can leave the German champions in January for €20m.

The Swiss midfielder has never been able to cement a regular spot in the first-team and Bayern are now prepared to let him leave, putting clubs on alert ahead of the January transfer window.

Shaqiri was part of FC Basel when they famously played a role in knocking Manchester United out at the group stages of the Champions League back in 2011, so United fans will know how dangerous he can be.

There have already been reports linking Shaqiri with a move to Old Trafford, with some even wildly suggesting Ander Herrera could go in the opposite direction and although the latter is more than likely far wide of the mark, could Louis van Gaal be interested in Shaqiri?

Angel di Maria is the only player who offers a real threat from the wing in United’s current set-up as the likes of Adnan Januzaj and Juan Mata are more clinical when cutting inside, so another pacy winger with natural width could appeal to Van Gaal. Of course, youngsters like Saidy Janko are waiting or an opportunity to impress.

United have much bigger prerogatives than a new winger but at €20m, Shaqiri would be very cheap in the current market.
