Manchester United have been put on red alert after Portuguese international midfielder Joao Moutinho handed in a transfer request at AS Monaco this week according to reports.
Moutinho, 28, has been linked with United for many years whilst at various European clubs and was even linked with a deadline day move similar to the one made by Radamel Falcao as Monaco looked for some financial stability during the summer.
The Ligue 1 side are struggling so far this season, sitting 8th in the league, and the departures of Falcao and World Cup star James Rodriguez have seemingly hindered their form and forced their other star in Moutinho to look for a way out.
The Express also claim that Chelsea and Arsenal are looking to capitalise on the news Moutinho wants to leave France but the fact the midfielder is represented by super agent Jorge Mendes may put United at the front of the queue, should they be interested.
Sir Alex Ferguson and Mendes built up a close working relationship over the past decade and the relationship Mendes has with the club continued in the summer with the arrival of several more of his clients.
The talented midfielder saw his name linked with United whilst at both Sporting Lisbon and Porto in Portugal and now they may have to face a bidding war with several rivals should Louis van Gaal decide he could be the right man to further improve the first team squad at Old Trafford.
