Manchester United defender Reece James has joined Sky Bet Championship side Rotherham United on an initial six-week loan deal.
James, 21, is primarily a left-back and was a regular in the team during Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the USA as Louis van Gaal gave chances to several of his youth products.
A combination of injury to Luke Shaw and van Gaal’s willingness to play with wing-backs gave James a rare shot at the first team football and he took it with both hands, scoring twice on his debut against LA Galaxy in July.
Despite his good form, James only appeared in the 4-0 defeat to MK Dons this season with the experience of Ashley Young preferred in the role whilst Shaw was still injured at the beginning of the new campaign.
The left-back spent a short time on loan at Carlisle United in 2013 but this will be his first taste of Championship football should he became a regular at the New York stadium.
James can expect to be thrown in at the deep end given The Millers currently sit in the relegation zone of the Championship after a difficult start to their season.
Rotherham were promoted via the League One play-offs in May but have won just four of their eighteen games so far this season so James could find himself walking straight into the first team this weekend as his side take on bottom of the league Blackpool.
