Evans: Van Gaal not to blame for injuries

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans says manager Louis van Gaal is not to blame for the recent injury crisis at Old Trafford.

Evans returned from a lengthy injury absence on Tuesday night in an U21 game against Blackburn but is one of several still not ready for first team action.

United have had no fewer than 40 injuries so far this season but Evans says the new boss isn’t to blame for the issues.

“Players don’t get injured on purpose,” Evans told MUTV.

“There have been injuries with the odd hamstring or groin, there have been quite a few of those, but [Marcus] Rojo dislocated his shoulder and I had a fracture in my foot.

“There were a couple of other injuries – Phil Jones has got one [shin splints] that came out of the blue. We don’t want any more injuries but what can we do about it?

“They’re freak injuries and it’s difficult from that point of view. It’d be nice to get settled in the team – everyone in the squad wants to get settled in their position as well.”

Van Gaal had come under criticism given the amount of injuries his players were picking up in training but as Evans suggests, lately the injuries have been picked up in games and even on international duty.

Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo were the latest to pick up injuries during matches whilst the unfortunate Daley Blind damaged knee ligaments on international duty earlier this month.

United host Hull City this weekend but it appears Evans won’t be ready to return for the visit of the Tigers.
