Herrera came on early in the first half following an injury to Angel di Maria and ended up being deservedly named Manchester United’s man of the match after a commanding performance.
It was Herrera’s return to action with the first team and Van Gaal was certainly pleased with how he played.
“I have to say Herrera came in and did fantastic, I was very pleased with how he did,” Van Gaal said.
“He is a very fit player which is why I also let him play in the Reserves. I’m very happy for him because he needed a good performance.
“I was very pleased with our dominance in the whole game and also with our positional game. We scored three goals, created more chances, and we didn’t give any chances away – that’s very good.”
Herrera now has played himself into contention to start the big matches in United’s festive period and with a game against Stoke in three days followed quickly by an away game to Southampton at the weekend, it’s all about to start getting very busy.
