The Dutch midfielder began his rehabilitation program last week having been given a break after suffering the injury but due to its severity, Blind faces at least another four weeks on the sideline.
Blind’s absence from the squad has been somewhat softened by the return of Michael Carrick but he is certainly a big miss.
“It’s not so heavy as I have already said,” van Gaal reported.
Speaking about a return date, Van Gaal added: “Not next week, I don’t know… Christmas maybe – maybe Christmas. At the end of December maybe we see light at the end of the tunnel.
Luckily for United, Carrick has slotted straight into Blind’s position as the anchor in midfield and with a resurgent Marouane Fellaini playing just in front of him, United’s midfield is looking relatively solid despite not having Blind in it.
That being said, Louis van Gaal will certainly want Blind available sooner rather than later as from January onwards the pressure starts to mount in the Premier League.
