Manchester United winger is favourite to be named Sporting Lisbon’s Player of the Year for 2014, despite only joining the club in August.
Although Nani featured heavily for United during pre-season and came on during the opening game of the season against Swansea City, he was loaned back to his former club as part of a deal that saw Marcos Rojo move to Old Trafford.
The story about hte Player of the year award was first reported in Portuguese paper Record yesterday ahead of Sporting’s annual ceremony in a fortnight’s time.
Nani has been in fine form since leaving Old Trafford and has replicated the form he showed in glimpses during his time at Old Trafford and already has four goals to his name in the Champions League this season, including a superb goal against NK Maribor.
It will be frustrating for United supporters to see their own player excelling in a competition they failed to qualify for but there will be hope the confidence Nani is gaining in Portugal will aid him if he returns to Old Trafford next season.
During the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons, Nani really showed his potential with a series of match-winning performances and alongside Dimitar Berbatov was key to United’s title triumph in 2011.
But inconsistency and injuries eventually saw Nani return to his old, frustrating self and his form dipped along with many others when David Moyes joined the club. Nani’s redemption back in Lisbon may be good for him and a permanent move shouldn’t be ruled out in the future.
