Southampton vs Man Utd: Potential 4-4-2 diamond – Rooney returns and Falcao starts

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United are going into the game against Southampton in high spirits off the back of a four game winning straight. Conversely, the Saints are in a run of poor form having not won in the last three.

Wayne Rooney missed the Stoke game through injury but reports suggest he’s ready to come straight back into training, so how could United line-up with him back in the side?

Given his goalscoring form, Rooney has to start up front and he could be paired with Radamel Falcao. The Colombian has made consecutive substitute appearances after returning from injury and is due to start sooner rather than later.

Juan Mata has now hit a run of good form and should be given the nod in the No.10 role or in central midfield should Louis van Gaal want to play Ander Herrera further up the pitch again.
