Ashley Young made a rare appearance in the WhoScored team of the week following his impressive performance for Manchester United against Stoke City.
Young has been rejuvenated in recent weeks after replacing Luke Shaw against Arsenal and going on to have a solid game at left wing-back, a position he excelled in during pre-season against the likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid, scoring against the latter.
The winger was picked to play at left-back in Shaw’s absence against Hull City on Saturday and looked even more comfortable there in his best performance of the season against Mark Hughes’ men on Tuesday night.
With Shaw set to miss potentially the rest of the Christmas period, Young may be called upon again and will need to keep up his form as United face tougher tests against Southampton and Liverpool in the next ten days.
Young was relatively untested against Hull and made a crucial clearance on the goal line in the 94th minute to salvage three points on Tuesday but the makeshift defender can expect to be targeted by teams with a larger attacking intent than that of Hull and Stoke.
Taking his place alongside James Tomkins, Martin Skrtel and Pablo Zabaleta in the Team of the Week, his company is testament to his performances and he’ll go to St. Mary’s on Monday night confident in his ability to help the team secure a crucial three points.
