Manchester United’s injury problems continued against Southampton tonight as Chris Smalling had to be substituted before half-time with a leg injury.
The United defender went down holding his leg without any players around him and it’s a worry for United given that those sorts of injuries are usually the ones which see players out for extended periods of time.
For Smalling, it is deja vu. He had just found some form having returned from suspension and alongside Marcos Rojo had given United’s defence some much needed stability which it has lacked this season.
Just when United seem to be getting somewhere with injuries, Smalling’s fresh problem is yet another setback. Van Gaal has had to use so many different defensive line-ups this year and it looks like he will have to switch up his line-up once again for the game against Liverpool on Sunday.
