Ezequiel Garay is still a player Manchester United are interested in signing despite the fact he joined Zenit St. Petersburg last summer, according to Andy Mitten.
The 28-year-old had long been linked a move to Old Trafford on more than one occasion and last summer he was a defender many saw as a potential signing for Louis van Gaal.
Sources close to Mitten suggest although interest in Benfica team-mate Enzo Perez is paper talk, Van Gaal’s interest in Garay was genuine. Even if that were the case, it didn’t stop Garay joining Zenit St. Petersburg.
Although Marcos Rojo arrived in the summer, United failed to replace the outgoing qualities of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic with any substantial signings which is why United’s defensive has been so poor this season. A lack of leadership at the back has really hindered United.
United and Garay is the defensive transfer equivalent of United and Sneijder which just doesn’t seem to want to go away. However, it’s no surprise to hear United linked with plenty of defenders and there will be plenty more over the coming months.
