Having settled a contractual dispute with Monaco which revolves around honouring wage payments, Valdes is now keen to secure his future and United is certainly going to be one of the first places he looks.
Louis van Gaal gave Valdes the opportunity to train with United and although his intention may have been to give an ex-player access to medical support for rehabilitation, Van Gaal would have certainly at least entertained the thought of signing Valdes, despite his public claims to the contrary.
As Valdes is a free agent, United would have no problem signing him in January but it would very much depend on what happens to Anders Lindegaard if Van Gaal did want to bring in Valdes.
Although Valdes may well be keen to sign a new deal with United, he may be forced to wait because Lindegaard is unlikely to be able to resolve his future in the January transfer window.
Lindegaard has already made it clear he wants to leave the club so it’s just a case of finding a buyer. As and when that happens, the possibility of Valdes joining United opens up.
